Alice laughed with her friends, as they sat in front of the fire, each one telling a story to either chill the others or make them laugh.
Billy had finished his story and everyone was in high spirits from the tale of ‘The Cat-Chicken’ which was so absurd it had to be true.
Randy, probably the most geeky of the group and worked at the local video store, sat up-right it was his turn.
Everyone knew he was a horror movie fan and knew that he would tell a story of to chill them, and before he finished they would probably be able to guess which movie he was re-telling.

“Go on Randy, lets hear your tale of terror” Alice said still laughing at Billy’s story.

“Alright gang, be prepared because this is not some made up tale, and it is not a movie plot either” he said noticing the sceptical looks from the guys “This is a true story and serves as a warning to all who hear it, remember the lesson you will learn from this it may save your life someday”

Everyone looked at each other and made spooky ‘Oooo’ sounds, laughing to themselves as they did so.

Randy did not seemed amused by this “I’m serious guys, people have died, people are still dying because of this” he sounded almost angry at their reaction.

“Fine Randy, chill out man, tell us your story that will save our lives and calm down” Matt said handing Randy a beer.

Randy sat and looked around the assembled group of friends.
“It all started over a hundred years ago, when a man was killed by an angry mob, he swore revenge and even now can be summoned back from the dead to kill”
“His real name is almost completely forgotten, lost in the mists of time”
“Now people only know him as the Candyman, a killer with a hook instead of his right hand, he can spew a swarm of bees from his mouth and can only be seen by the person who summoned him”
“He guts his victims with his hook and no matter where you run or hide he will find you, you can’t hide from the dead”
“The legend goes that to summon him you have to look in a mirror and say his name five times, and then he will return from the dead, kill all the people you love and then kill you”
“So remember, never say his name in a mirror because if you do he will find you, and kill you”

The whole group burst into laughter.
“Great story Randy, you had me going at the start, what with being so serious about it” Billy roared with laughter.

Randy stood and shouted at the group “I’M NOT JOKING AROUND HERE! THIS IS REAL! PEOPLE HAVE DIED; PEOPLE ARE STILL BEING KILLED BY HIM!”

The group stopped laughing; Randy stormed out of the house in a rage.
They all looked at each other “What is his problem” Lizzy said and leaned back into Matt’s arms.

Alice got up and went after Randy.

“Are you alright?” she asked concerned over his uncharacteristic reaction.
“No I’m not alright! None of you take me seriously! The Candyman is real, believe me I know!” Randy said his voice betrayed his anger and his fear.

“Did someone you know get killed by him?” Alice asked; it being the only theory she could think of that would make him act like this and say what he said.

“Yes, someone I knew died at the end of his hook” Randy sighed “She said his name five times in the mirror to prove it was just a legend, but it wasn’t and he came and killed her”

Alice put an arm around him, if it had been anyone else she would have thought this was some pathetic attempt to get sympathy sex, but Randy, despite his name, wasn’t like that.

“Who was it?” she asked.

“My cousin Teri” Randy replied “It happened six years ago now, but time doesn’t matter to someone like Candyman, he’s already dead after all”
Randy spun round and grabbed Alice by the shoulders “Promise me; promise me you’ll never say his name in a mirror! Not even once, not ever!”

Alice was shaken by Randy’s reaction, his complete fear, and even more complete belief in this supernatural killer.
“I promise alright, now let go you’re hurting me!” Alice struggled, and Randy let her go.
“Sorry I didn’t know I was hurting you, I didn’t mean to, I’d never hurt you” he apologized.

The two re-entered the house and found a scene that only made things worse.
Billy was standing facing a mirror, and he was speaking to his reflection.
“Candyman, Candyman, Candyman, Candyman… “

Randy grabbed Alice and pulled her with him through the front door screaming out “NO!”

“Candyman” Billy finished.

Alice turned to Randy who was white with terror.
“God I hope it worked” he gasped “If we’re lucky then he won’t come after us because we weren’t in the room”

A weak hope he knew that, but it was the only straw left to clutch to.

Matt threw the door open and stared at them “What the hell was that?”

Randy pointed at him “I warned you, I warned you all and you didn’t listen, and now that dumb asshole Billy has killed you all, but not me man, not me I’m out of here!” Randy ran off.

Matt looked at Alice “So that confirms it, he’s a nut, I always thought he might be, but now I know” he nodded his head back toward the door “You coming back in or not?”

Alice looked at Randy’s shrinking form and then back at Billy and the others inside.

A chill ran through her whole body, something about how Randy reacted to the whole thing struck a cord in her, it made the whole legend so very real.
She wondered if it was safe to return to the company of her friends, or if it would be safer to sprint after Randy and stay away from the whole thing.

Her experience with Randy’s behaviour over the last few years told her that he might be over-reacting, but the chill wouldn’t leave.

“Sorry Matt, I think I’m going to catch Randy up, I don’t want him to do something stupid while he’s upset” she began to leave “Say goodnight to everyone for me” she called out and ran as fast as she could to catch her friend.

Matt re-entered shaking his head “I tell you guys Randy is out of his flipped out movie addled mind” he said almost laughing.

“Yeah we heard, man I know I sometimes take a joke to far but that was over the top” Billy grinned, and silently vowed to take up the matter with Randy about being called an asshole.

Lizzy rolled her eyes “Randy is just trying to get Alice into bed, it’s all just some stupid sympathy method of getting laid, I mean its not like he’s got anything else going for him”

Matt laughed and sat down with his girlfriend.

Jenny moved over next to Billy, she had been silent ever since Randy had told the Candyman story “You don’t think there is any truth in the story he told do you?” she asked more than a little scared.

“What?” Billy gasped almost busting a gut in laughter “No there’s no truth in it at all, its just some dumb ass story he made up to give us a scare”

Jenny was not convinced; she remembered some news headlines from a few years ago.
“Do you guys remember the murders in New Orleans a couple of years ago” she began “Eight people were killed with a hook-like weapon, or stung to death by bees in areas bees wouldn’t be able to get into”

“So?” Billy shrugged.

“Well what if it was this Candyman Randy was on about?” Jenny wrapped her arms around herself “What if he’s real, I mean we have people flying around in capes, racing around cities in bright costumes, all kinds of strange things turning up all over the world, what if this is real?”

Matt laughed out loud at the very idea, his laugh was cut short when he spurted blood from his mouth and a hole opened up in his throat, yet no weapon was visible.

Lizzy screamed and crawled away from her dead boyfriend covered in his blood.

Billy looked over and saw a man in a fur lined coat, his dark eyes staring at him, his right hand was a gleaming hook.

He was the Candyman.

The girls saw a strange wavy image slowly appearing as their belief in his existence grew stronger, they too were cursed by Billy’s summoning of him, they too would see him just before they died, just like Matt.

Lizzy darted for the door, but was lifted off the floor by the Candyman’s hook as he slammed it into her gut.

The remaining two watched in horror as she was gutted right before their eyes.
Lizzy was ripped open and flung aside like an unwanted paper bag.

Billy tried to get to a window, he could see the killer he had summoned by his words in the mirror, and he could see him advancing on them.
Jenny could now see a ghostly image of a tall African-American man walking toward her.

Billy pushed Jenny toward the Candyman “Take her just let me live!” he begged, showing his true colours as a spineless coward in the face of danger.

“What? You asshole!” Jenny screamed, but was impaled on the gleaming hook as it tore through her back and ripped her spine from her body.

“You don’t seem to care for anyone but yourself, I pity you, now you will die unloved by this poor girl, all because you are such a coward” the Candyman advanced and loomed over Billy.

“Time to die, may your soul burn in the eternal torment of Hell for your cowardly betrayal of the girl who loved you” the gleaming hook split Billy’s side and sliced up until it hooked on to his ribs and lifted him up to his eye level.
“I never betrayed the woman I loved, I was willing to die for her and she for me” he rasped into Billy’s face “She proved that and I sold my soul for the power to get my revenge for her death, you sicken me, willing to betray the ones who loved you just to spare your own worthless life”

The Candyman opened his mouth and a swarm of bees flew from his mouth and engulfed Billy, stinging him until he died painfully, screaming until the very last moment of his life was gone.

Randy and Alice got to Alice’s home and stopped outside.
“Do you think they’ll be alright?” Alice asked, now worried that Randy was right about this Candyman.

“No I don’t think they will be safe at all, I think they are probably already dead” Randy looked back down the road they had walked “He works fast”

“Seriously Randy that was where you make me feel better and say ‘Sure Alice they’ll be fine’ you know in a comforting way even if you don’t mean it” Alice scorned his lack of compassion “They are our friends!”

“Your friends Alice not mine, they never liked me, they just suffered with me around because of you” Randy grumbled.

Alice looked at him and suddenly noticed that he was really hurt by that, she had hoped that over time he would make friends; that they would accept him and him accept them, but it seemed that had not happened.

“If you felt like that why did you always stick with us?” she asked.

“Because of you” he replied simply “Come on Alice you know I’ve been in love with you since high school, but I knew I didn’t stand a chance because you keep getting involved with some brainless asshole or another”

Alice couldn’t help but be a little flattered by that, it was true that since coming to New York and attending collage she had suffered a string of bad boyfriends over the last year or so, and Randy had stuck by her side no matter how her boyfriends treated him.
“Randy why have you never asked me out?” she asked.

“Because like I said you always got together with some asshole” he replied.

“No I mean when I broke up with them, why didn’t you as me out?” she pointed out that there had been over a month between lousy boyfriends.

“Well, I don’t know, I guess I wanted to give you the chance to get over the last one before starting another relationship” he said “Why would you have said Yes?”

Alice smiled and kissed him on the cheek “Of course I would, I’ve known you for years, I know you wouldn’t hurt me and that you really care for me, what more do I need”

The two young collage students embraced and kissed under the stars.

The following morning the newspapers brought them crashing down to reality.

‘FOUR DEAD IN BRUTAL SLAUGHTER’

‘ESU COLLAGE STUDENT MASSACER’

‘VIOLENT MURDER OF FOUR’

The headlines screamed the fate of their friends.
Alice broke down into tears and cried for hours before being able to get a hold of herself.
Randy sat in silence holding the girl he loved, he knew all to well who had killed them, had warned them about him.

“The Candyman is back” he whispered in terror.

Two days had passed since the death of their friends, and both Randy and Alice believed that their quick exit had saved them both.

The news was still going around about how brutal and gruesome the murders had been.

Alice still found it hard to hear anything about it, and she found it hard to sleep at all.

Randy insisted that she get some sleep, and he would keep watch to ensure she was safe.

Alice insisted that he join her, after all she would feel better with him beside her, the only guy she knew who had never done anything but care for her.

More days passed, and their confidence grew, they were safe.
Or so they thought.

As Randy walked across the campus grounds he looked up at the building, straight at the window of the room he knew Alice was in.

She stood in the window and waved at him, he waved back.
She blew a kiss and Randy went white as he saw someone appear behind her.
It was him.
He waved a warning to the girl he loved so much.
She turned and was impaled by the sharp hook, which tore up her body splitting her almost in half.

Randy stood silent in horror.
The Candyman looked down at him.

"I know" Randy whispered "You'll find me and I'll die, but not today, no you want me to suffer first, suffer the grief of her death"

Candyman vanished.

Randy ran all the way to the room and phoned the police on route.
He refused to let anyone into the room, and was so stubborn about it that the faculty had to intervene, and once they saw why he wasn't letting anyone in helped him keep the scene untouched for the police.

Randy told them what he knew, but was well aware that they didn't believe him when he told them about Candyman.

That night he went home and sat in-front of his P.C, he recorded a message and put it, along with some files and reports he had gathered over the years, onto a flash drive.

He wrapped the flash-drive up in bubble wrap and placed it in a padded envelope.
He checked the address and postage, then went out and posted it in the nearest mail box.

"Well now it is out of my hands" he sighed.

Returning home he knew what to expect.

He sat in a dark room and waited.
He didn't have to wait long.

"Finally you and I meet again" a deep harsh voice sounded from behind him.

"I knew you would be the one to kill me, I've known for years" Randy said afraid no more.

"Yes it was meant to be, you could see me when no one else could, you knew my work when you saw it" Candyman remembered "And you knew no one would believe you, so you told no one, until that night"

"Tell me something" Randy asked "Was it because I told her that she died, or was it because we didn't get away fast enough?"

"Neither" Candyman smiled down at him "You have been my quarry since you saw me all those years ago, I just waited until the right time to come for you"

"So she did die because of me?" Randy began to cry.

"No she died because of Billy, he had deep thoughts of her, deep desires for her, his lust was like a tidal wave when I killed him, he cursed her with his dark desires, you did nothing to her, but you will still die" Candyman lifted Randy's face with his hook to meet his gaze.
"You will die, and your death will become a story to scare children, to chill the blood in all who hear it, your death will add to my name" he gently pulled Randy to his feet "Come with me and become immortal in legend and story"

Randy closed his eyes and as he felt the hook rip him open from groin to gullet, his voice gasped out one last word.
"Alice"

The tale of Randy's death scared the students of ESU for weeks to come, those who had known him told the story in as gory a detail as they could.
He was a huge horror movie fan, they thought it was the best way to remember him.

Days after his death his parcel arrived at its destination.

Gale Weathers opened it and took the flash drive from inside.

She put it in her lap-top and scanned it for viruses.
It was clear.
She opened it and the video began.

"Hello Miss Weathers, or can I call you Gale, after all this isn't exactly formal.
My name is Randy Meeks and by the time you see this I will be dead.
I send you this message and the files on this flash-drive so you can continue my work, to find a way to stop the guy who killed me.
He isn't a normal murderer, he is paranormal and bloody powerful.
He is the Candyman, the files will tell you all I Know about him.
But first I must give you this warning.
Never, NEVER, say his name in the mirror!
If you say his name in the mirror five times he will come for you and kill you, so don't do it, not even once!
To many have died already.
I know you were an important part in solving the Woodsboro murders a few years ago.
And I know you have the kind of investigative mind to solve this case.
Find out about him, find a way to defeat him.
Go to the Ultimates if you have to, or the Fantastic Four.
Hell go to a lone hero if it helps, like Spider-man, Blue Beetle or that hot speedy chick in Chicago, whats her name, Velocity thats it.
Just be careful and don't summon him, I don't know how to stop him, I'm hoping you will have better luck.
He's coming for me, probably tonight.
So this is my legacy, a flash-drive full of information about my killer.
I know you don't know me, and you don't owe anyone for your fame.
But I know that a reporter like you can not walk away from the biggest story in her life, and believe me this will be huge!
We are talking award winning story, movie deals the works!
So if you won't do this as the dying wish from a stranger, then do it for you, your career.
Thanks for watching this at least.
Goodbye"

The video ended and Gale began to read through the files of information.
This would be a huge story if she could prove the existence of the Candyman.
But ti wasn't for the fame or the possible movie deals she was doing this, well not only for that.
The look on that guys face, the sound of his voice haunted her.
He had believed this and it had killed him.
She knew he was dead she had seen it on the news.
And before he died he had chosen her to tell his story to.
"What an exclusive!" she grinned as she read the information "If I can find proof, this will make me the biggest reporter in history!"
"Look out Lois Lane, April O'Neil and Jack McGee, Gale Weathers is back!"

~End~

And there I was, hoping that Randy and Alice had beaten the Devil! :'( Oh well, I guess it wasn't to be. At least Randy died with dignity, unlike a certain guy whose name began with 'B'. And he'll be with Alice forever where no-one and nothing can hurt them, though their deaths still must be avenged. >:(

When oh when will teenagers learn that telling spooky stories late at night (especially whilst getting drunk and trying to impress their girlfriends) never ends well?

The final scene with Gale was great, I recognise her from the "Phantasm" story. Great touch, using her. 8-) Randy's video was spine tingling, he's so desperate to persuade her to make his death mean something by stopping The Candy Man. I wonder if Gale will go to someone like Velocity (who would try to keep her from danger) for help or if she'll tackle the story on her own (therefore giving herself full control over the investigation), I guess we must wait and see whether she decides furthering the cause of good or furthering her own career is worth more. One thing I'll tell you now, I for one look forward to finding out! ;)

And hey, I loved the references to her rival reporters at the end! Fantastic yarn, Roctev! ;D
