The Badlands

'How many more do I have to destroy?' Rulk wondered to himself. 'Just get the picture already.'

The giant red monster sat hiding in his cave as the evening approaches. The dead rabbit roasting on the makeshift spit slowly cooking. Rulk wondered how many more would come by sunrise? They were probably planning the next attack right this very minute.

The puny humans and their guns and missiles. Everyday they got smarter, and braver. For every helicopter, tank and jeep the Rulk would smash, ten more would come at him.

Ever since leaving California they would come at him. And every time they would try Rulk would squash them like gnats.

But every battle meant new weaponry. It was the fifth battle that they had made him bleed, the eighth battle they had pierced his skin and had removed something ad it took him days to recover, not even fully recover at that.

Rulk would always flee when he got mad, he knew that when he got really mad he would get hot, and the hotter he got the weaker he got.

And they knew that too, it's why they would keep coming, with new ways to kill him.

Rulk knew they would succeed, he was in so much pain and all this was just simply torture. To push him to the limits and then end his life once and for all.

He was a trapped animal with limited time.

"Damn humans." Rulk whispered, wiping away a tear from his eye.

He ate the rabbit and then threw the spit aside, he huddled inside the cave and went to sleep.

'They were coming, let them come. Some will go before me before they finally kill me. Yes....take as many of you with me...'

Desert Base
The nest morning.

General Ross saluted General Samuel Troutman upon his arrival from Washington D.C. All the way over, Troutman had a stern look on his face and his body language spoke of a man who wanted answers to a question that left General Troutman scratching his head.

Troutman gout out of the stylish military hummer and walked up to Ross.

"General Troutman." Ross greeted. "Welcome to Desert Base."

Troutman didn't return the salute. Samuel wanted to beat up on Thaddeus right then and there. Instead, he turned to the driver of the hummer.

"Keep the engine running, this won't take long."

Ross turned and entered the main building of the base, Troutman followed suit and the two officers rode the elevator to the floor where Ross' office was situated at.

Ross entered the office first and sat down in the chair behind his desk.

"Comfortable?" Troutman spat.

"Just state your business Sam." Ross said, annoyance in his voice.

"Fine! You've got nerve returning to service and don't think I don't know how you got back in. Ryker must have pulled some heavy strings for you and if I had my way the both of you would be facing a firing squad this very minute."

"You came all the way out here to tell me this yourself?"

"Don't you dare pretend to play games with me Thaddeus. I don't know what exactly you're doing here but I hope you haven't unpacked because you sure as hell aren't going to be staying long."

"What I do here, I do in the service of my country." Ross said, calmness in his voice.

"Bullshit!" Troutman yelled, pounding a fist on Ross' desk. Ross jumped up to his feet and looked at Troutman as if daring Samuel to 'make his day.'

"You're a loose cannon Ross. Obsessed with this hoax you call the Hulk. You've wasted the government's time and the taxpayers money on nothing but a wild goose chase with absolutely nothing to show for it."

"That's where you're wrong." Ross growled.

"Then show me." Troutman defied. "Right here, right now."

"F*ck you!" Ross spat. "I don't answer to you Troutman, now get the hell out of my office and off my base."

General Troutman slowly backed away from Ross.

"Your days are numbered and your time will come." Was all Troutman said before heading out of the office, slamming the door shut behind him.

General Troutman took the elevator to the ground floor alone, He was Glad to be leaving. He climbed inside the hummer and reached for his cell phone as the hummer left the base for the airport.

Troutman put the phone to his ear after dialing a secure line and number.

"GW Bridge? I want to meet with Nick Fury, when is he available?"
.............................................................................................................

Ross left his office five minutes after Troutman. He took the elevator to desert base's research lab. The technology they were developing to stop the red menace was progressing quickly. Two guards saluted Ross before he entered the lab.

"Tell me you've got something on the liver Dr. Bishop." Ross spoke to the lead scientist.

"The adamantium grenade was a giant success." Dr. Bishop replied. "If it weren't for that-"

"Just answer the damn question." Ross ordered.

"Right, the liver. Well as you know without it the creature only has days and judging from the attached tissue samples his cellular structure cannot replicate or even repair any damaged areas. In short, we've crippled him."

"Good." Ross drawled. "What else."

"Due to the amount of radiation from the liver alone? My team and I can construct something that can almost erase the radiated cells within the subjects body but..."

"But what?" Ross wondered.

"Dr. Bishop looked at his clipboard, checking his notes to make sure his next words weren't misunderstood. "The device could only be used once with no hope of reloading."

"But you can reconstruct the device?"

"Oh hell yes." Bishop stated. "We can use it for a shoulder mounted weapon like an rpg or possibly a turret."

Ross liked what he heard. It would go along well with Ryker's plans.

"In your opinion, how much more of a threat does Red Menace pose?"

Dr. Bishop laughed. "I guarantee you General Ross that Red Menace has days left. Right now the creature is in unbearable pain, even for something as strung and resilient as him. Without his liver, his body will gradually start shutting down until it completely shuts off."

"Nice to know we already killed it." Ross observed. "Now we deliver the deathblow. Thank you doctor, keep up the great work."

Dr. Bishop nodded as Ross left the lab and strolled over to the advanced weaponry department. Ryker had a good plan and Ross only knew half of it. His main job right now was to oversee the development of Ryker's project. Ryker promised results, and Ross didn't mind being kept in the dark for now.

Dr Bishop walked into the Advanced Weaponry Department and looked over the latest ideas and schematics that were set out on his desk.

General Ross would be pleased with some of the new tech they were developing, if not pleased with all of it.

A smile broadened across his face when one of the staff told him that his crowning glory had arrived from Detroit.

This little toy would be the master piece he would offer Ross, something he knew would put him and keep him in the Generals good books for a long time.

He took the plans that had come with the new acquisition.
"My God these are better than I thought, with the latest modifications I wrote up in preparation for this the possibilities are immense!" he gasped, whoever had worked on this was a real artist in his work.

He went to inspect the arrival.

Some minor damage, done prior to it getting into their hands.
Easily fixed and modified.
All in all it was even more outstanding than he had dreamed.

He kept it quiet, even from the General, he wanted this to be a surprise.

The final part to his master piece arrived later that day, it had to be rushed over to prevent any further damage to it.
Time was not the healer to all things.

"Time to set to work" he barked to his team.

This was going to be a work of art, something the world would look to as the next step in weaponry.
This would guarantee his place in the history books of science.

"Behold!" he said to his team as he drew back the curtain and showed them what they were working on "ED-209"

Dr. Bishop's staff looked at the giant robot and then to each other, some were talking in groups of two and three and others just waited until Dr. Bishop to speak once more.

"I don't get it!" Said a raised voice. "We're going to fight Red Menace with a busted up toy robot?"

Dr. Bishop sighed in disbelief, he closed his eyes and rubbed his eyelids. The voice came from the youngest of the staff. His name was Eli Whittaker, he was still a teenager but he was a member of Mensa also.

"I swear to god Eli, if I were a violent person I'd stuff your fat ass in a mailbox." Dr. Bishop said in a calm tone of voice.

The rest of the staff shortly laughed.

"Yes Eli!" Dr. Bishop said a bit more louder, to recapture his staff's attention. "I'll give you all alittle background history on ED 209. You see, it was supposed to be a project developed by a private company in Michigan. However the plans, development and even the concept of the ED 209 itself were deemed too expensive, to risky, even too dangerous that it was passed over by every company that could even provide funding."

Dr. Bishop's staff were all silent, waiting for the project head to continue.

"However, as you can all see the ED 209 was funded and constructed but what we don't know is by whom. And that isn't our business anyhow. So YES we are going to modify this 'toy robot' to terminate the Red Menace because that's our top priority. Any more questions?"

"No one raised a hand.

Dr. Bishop smiled. "Great. Let's get started shall we?"

It seemed that this Red Menace was proving hard to find, but Dr Bishop didn't care, it gave him the chance to finish his work.

His specialist knowledge in such areas as Cybernetics and Engineering and Robotics made it a joy to work on this particular project.

After days of hard work he put the newly completed Battle Robot through some tests.

Another couple of days testing and making tiny adjustments soon had the ED-209 in fully working order, better than anyone had ever imagined.

He grinned and sent word to General Ross that the latest and greatest weapon in the war against the Red Menace and all its kind was complete.

"What a kick he will get when he meets you" Dr Bishop chuckled.

General Ross walked into the Advanced Weapon Department he walked over to Dr Bishop and looked at him with the air of someone who expected a lot from the scientist.

"Greatest Weapon in the War?" General Ross quoted the message Bishop had sent.

Dr Bishop smiled "Indeed General you will not be disappointed"

They walked over to the large Robot, which was unveiled when the white cloth was pulled off.

"General Ross this is an ED-209 battle robot, the project was scrapped years ago when the programming proved to be 'problematic', but someone modified the original and built it, we obtained it and have been able to improve the reliability by using a somewhat controversial method.
I speak of course of cyborgs, the use of human parts to augment the robotic, in this case a human brain, that of a soldier, the brain was not as fresh as we would have liked but once our procedure was complete it was a complete success, this model is utterly loyal and will follow orders without question, the perfect soldier.
And I do believe you will find it to your liking, especially after you see whose brain we used, quite the icing on the cake, right General"

Dr Bishop handed Ross the file on the 'donor'.

"We call it the 'Tactical Armed Land Robot' or *chuckle* the TALBOT, amusing isn't it"

General Ross looks at the robot and grinned a satisfied grin.
"Hello Glen, you've never looked better"

For a split second Ross felt a huge sense of morbidity. But then overcame his initial reaction as Dr. Bishop went on.

"You see General, the TALBOT is equipped with a Gatling gun that houses .75 gage ammunition of various types on it's left. It's right as you can also observe is equipped with three rocket launchers so TALBOT can be equipped with miniature versions of sidewinders, skorpions, heat seekers and stingers. There is also a laser guidance system as well as thermal recognition and electromagnetic scanning technology."

"What are the things on the shoulders for?" Ross wondered. "More missiles?"

"Of a sort, yes. Once the TALBOT finds Red Menace it can deploy a special payload of a modified NX gas, but it's extremely lethal to Red Menace's genetic makeup. If the TALBOT can fire off one of those rockets close to Red's proximity...his nervous system will shut down and he'll be depowered."

"So every other gizmo is just to slow him down until-"

"-we make him come to a complete stop and let his liquidation happen naturally...which it already is, I assure you General. All you have to do is find Red Menace and TALBOT will handle the rest."

Ross nodded his approval. First the Rulk, then banner.

"Have the TALBOT prepped and ready for a field test."

Dr. Bishop nodded. "Yes sir."

Ross walked out of the lab in good spirits. He silently wished for the Rulk to make a blip on the radar, it would be his last.

The Badlands

'Hurts so much.' Rulk thinks to himself as he sluggishly walks out of the cave to hunt for his breakfast. 'So much pain..."

If the creature could have looked at himself in a mirror, even he would be surprised at his own reflection. The glowing yellow eyes had dimmed and looked sunken, there were green spots all over his massive body, and to make matters worse, his wounds had stopped healing.

Despite all this, Rulk still felt strong. He jumped to a nearby cliff that overlooked a big plateau to scout any form of life that he could kill and cook. He stood at the vantage point for a few minutes when the sensations came again.

Cold, the Rulk felt a chilling all over his body. Soon followed by a sudden nausea and dizziness. He lost control of his footing and started to plummet to the earth.

The last thing Rulk saw before he blacked out was the edge of the cliff growing farther in the distance.

If it's one thing Sgt. Perry "Hummer" Bradley hated; it was taking patrol duty in a helicopter. He hated flying in general and whenever he was airborne he wished he had a commission in the Navy instead. Besides, there was nothing but sand and cliffs. It was the badlands after all.

"So Hummer?" Said the co-pilot, Sgt. Stan Harrison. "The way you came down on the new recruits, the General will have your brass if you get too out of line."

"So what Stan? They need tough discipline. We're slipping in the world's opinion and we need to get better." Bradley checked the fuel and mileage gages, just to make sure they had enough fuel and to see how far they had flown.

"Yeah, but do you need to be a total asshole? We're supposed to be humane as well."

"Oh don't give me that-" Sgt. Bradley stated but his words were cut short as they flew past the Rulk.

"Give me confirmation on that!" he ordered, turning the helicopter around for another fly by.

"Yes sir, that's him alright."Aztec to Gamma base?" Sgt. Bradley said after switching on his radio.

"Gamma Base, go ahead."

"Red Menace sighted. Repeat: Red Menace sighted." He gave the coordinates to the dispatch operator at Gamma Base."

"Received and understood, report back to base ASAP. Do not harass. Over and out."

"Man he's a big sucker ain't he?" Sgt. Harrison commented.

"Doesn't matter anymore Stan, the fat lady is warming up just for him."
